Understanding Car Insurance Coverage Types
A comprehensive guide to Florida auto insurance coverage types and what they protect.
Required Coverage in Florida
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Covers your medical expenses and lost wages, regardless of fault. Florida requires a minimum of $10,000. This coverage follows you, paying benefits even if you're at fault.
Property Damage Liability (PDL)
Pays for damage to others' property when you're found at fault. Florida requires a minimum of $10,000. This does not cover damage to your own vehicle.
Bodily Injury Liability (BIL)
Covers medical bills and damages for injuries to others when you're at fault. It is not required for every Florida driver, but may be required after certain violations and is strongly recommended.
Optional But Recommended Coverage
Collision Coverage
Pays for damage to your vehicle from collisions with other vehicles or objects. Typically covers 80% of repair costs after deductible. Required if you have a car loan.
Comprehensive Coverage
Covers damage to your vehicle from events other than collisions (theft, weather, vandalism, etc.). Also required if financing your vehicle.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Protects you if hit by someone without insurance or with insufficient coverage. Especially important in Florida where many drivers are uninsured.
Medical Payments Coverage
Supplemental coverage for medical bills if injured in an accident, regardless of fault. Works alongside PIP in Florida.
Which Coverage Do You Need?
If you have a financed vehicle, you must have collision and comprehensive coverage. For older paid-off vehicles, consider your financial situation. Uninsured motorist coverage is highly recommended in Florida.
